Eligibility Categories and Subjects
The CSIR-UGC NET exam qualifies candidates for the following categories:
- Category 1: Award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and eligibility for appointment as Assistant Professor. Candidates are also eligible for Ph.D. admission.
- Category 2: Eligibility for appointment as Assistant Professor and admission to Ph.D. These candidates are not eligible for JRF.
- Category 3: Eligibility for admission to Ph.D. only. These candidates are not eligible for JRF or Assistant Professor.

Essential Qualification
The following qualifications are generally required:
- Master’s Degree or equivalent with 55%+ marks (General/EWS).
- Master’s Degree with 50%+ marks (OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD, Third gender).
- Final year Master's students or those awaiting results can apply provisionally.
- Ph.D. holders (Master's by 19th Sept 1991) get 5% mark relaxation.
- 4-year/8-semester Bachelor’s: 75%+ marks (70% for SC/ST/OBC-NCL/PwD/EWS); eligible for JRF/Ph.D. only.
- Final semester/year of 4-year Bachelor’s may also apply.
Selection Process
- The selection is based on performance in the Computer Based Test (CBT).
- The test consists of Objective Type Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs).
- The duration of the examination is 180 minutes (3 hours) without any break.
- The question paper has three parts: Part A (General Aptitude), Part B (Subject-specific), and Part C (Higher-order/analytical subject questions).
- Negative marking is applicable as per the subject-wise scheme.
